A proper inspection helps you avoid hidden problems, unexpected repairs, and overpriced vehicles. This guide walks you through everything to check before making a purchase.
Exterior Condition
Check the exterior for paint fading, scratches, dents, rust spots, cracked windows, foggy headlights, or misaligned body panels. These issues can indicate previous accidents or poor maintenance.
Under the Hood
Look for leaks, corrosion, or damaged hoses. Check oil level and color, coolant level, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. Listen for unusual engine noises. A clean, well-maintained engine bay is a good sign of proper care.
Interior Condition
Inspect seats, carpets, and the dashboard for stains, tears, or excessive wear. Test all electronics including windows, locks, lights, radio, backup camera, and climate controls. Pay attention to unusual smells, which may indicate water damage or mold.
Test Drive Checklist
During the test drive, evaluate acceleration, braking, steering response, transmission shifting, and road noise. Notice any vibrations, pulling to one side, or warning lights. A smooth, quiet drive usually means the vehicle is in good condition.
Vehicle History Review
Review the vehicle’s history report for accidents, title issues, mileage inconsistencies, and service records. Confirm the VIN matches the car. Consistent maintenance records are a strong sign of reliability.
Tires & Wheels
Inspect tire tread depth, uneven wear, bulges, or cracks. Make sure all four tires match in brand and size. Check the rims for bends or curb damage. Uneven wear can signal alignment or suspension problems.
Professional Inspection
